The NJCA FYO is organizing student-centric activities in Washington, D.C., from Tuesday, April 21, through Thursday, April 23, in conjunction with Job Corps’ National 50th Anniversary Celebration.

The National Job Corps 50th Anniversary Planning Committee and the NJCA FYO hope students will be a part of:

  • Job Corps’ National 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Mellon Auditorium;
  • Student Leadership Conference; and
  • Civic Education Meetings.

Our goal is to have Job Corps students from across the country play integral roles in helping to plan the future of Job Corps.

Student Information

To showcase the depth and breadth of Job Corps, the NJCA FYO is requesting that all operators select one student from each of its centers to participate.  We also encourage operators to include an alternate student. (Some alternates may be selected based on overall participation.) Operators are welcome to bring multiple students to D.C.; however, due to space limitations, only those official Ambassadors will be able to attend Job Corps’ National 50th Anniversary Celebration and the Student Leadership Conference.

Suggested dress code for the students will be: dark pants and blazer (navy or black), white shirt and tie for men; dark suit or dress for women.

Student Ambassadors Activities

National Job Corps 50th Anniversary Celebration

Our students will be front and center at the Mellon Auditorium.  In a symbolic opening ceremony, Student Ambassadors will represent the 125 Job Corps centers across the country.  Each student will proceed into the event with a “building block” that tells the story of their center. The blocks will be placed around the stage to help establish the theme of “Job Corps: Building the Future of America’s Youth.”  Students will then take their seats at designated tables using a ticket from a table purchased by their operator, or an individual ticket.  There will be discounted student tickets available when individual tickets sales begin.  Chaperones will be able to attend the event using a ticket purchased by their centers. There will be limited standing room only space for non-ticketed guests.

Student Leadership Conference: Building the Future of Americas Youth

The NJCA FYO plans to host a one-and-half-day conference for students to learn, hear from DOL and Job Corps leadership, and visit with their peers.  The Student Leadership Conference will take place at the Sheraton Pentagon City.

Civic Education

A key component of leadership is civic education. There is no better way to learn how government works than from members of Congress and their staffers.  Therefore, the NJCA has reserved time for Student Ambassadors to go to Capitol Hill to meet with their congressional representatives with their center or operator staff. If possible, the students may bring a small token that represents their home state.

Please complete the attached Student Participation Form for each center.

Chaperones

Each student attending the events must be assigned a chaperone to ensure safety, serve as a point of contact for the NJCA FYO and assist with other aspects of the Student Ambassador program. Operators will determine the best student-to-chaperone ratio for their delegations. Small operators may choose to share a chaperone with another operator.

Chaperones are not required to register for the 50th Anniversary Celebration or the Student Leadership Conference, but may attend as many of the student activities as they wish.

Please provide the name and contact information for each chaperone on the attached Student Participation Form.

The NJCA has arranged a block of hotel rooms for the students and their chaperones (Hilton Garden Inn Arlington/Courthouse Plaza) that is separate from the conference host hotel (Sheraton Pentagon City).  Please use the URL below or call directly and reference the group name below to make your reservation.
